Why Would You Build Backlinks to Your Site?

An article on Help 2 Succeed about learning how to correctly get backlinks to your website.

So you have a website and now you need to drive traffic to it. This is an area in which most inexperienced online marketers struggle with. They look around at all the “old school” techniques like link exchanges and search engine submissions and waste hours doing things that they’d be lucky to get any traffic from at all. If your focus is on driving real, quality traffic to your website, you should set your eyes on building backlinks to your site.

A backlink is simply anything a visitor can click on while browsing another site in order to get to your site. This can be done via text or an image, but text links are better.

Building backlinks to your site has several benefits:

1. You will get some direct traffic from the links.

2. The links will give you a boost in search results.

3. You will be able to extend your footprint around the internet.

Search engines “see” backlinks as votes for your webpage. The more webpages you have “voting” for you, the better. Further, if the website linking back to your site has more authority with items such as the amount of people visiting, longevity and the quantity of backlinks from other sites, the better the links are for your site.

Here’s some examples of pages that get a high authority?

Page A has 140 backlinks, mostly from high authority sites like CNN, Yahoo, and other news sites.

Page B has 2,000 backlinks, mostly from junky sites, directories and links pages.

Page A would certainly be a stronger link target because it would carry more weight in the search engines.

You want to get a lot of links from a number of different sites, but try to focus on sites that carry some authority of their own.

So far we have:

Get lots of links from a variety of sites.

Try to focus on pages that carry some authority of their own.

Try to focus on pages that do not have a lot of links on them already.

The last piece of the puzzle is to focus on relevant pages. If your webpage is about fine art, you do not want a link from a site about kitty litter. That doesn’t make sense. You want a link from a site that talks about designing or style. Relevance is important.

So now you have a strategy to go out and get some backlinks to your site. Begin contacting webmasters and propose some content in exchange for a link to your site on one of their pages. Be creative and go get some quality links!
