In the olden days, the Old Masters used to take on students who would learn direct from the professional. The students would first only be allowed to clean the studio. A student would never know how long he was going to be the cleaner - but he did learn how to take care of the tools and he did learn how the Master Artist held his tools, how he set up his workspace and more. The next step a student took was to "go fetch", meaning that he would be helping the Old Master to set up the workspace. And then, of course, one wondrous day, the Old Master would have the student set up his own workspace and start duplicating what he was doing. This was a successful method for an artist to learn direct from the master or professional.
